The domain name

Your website has an address assigned by Service, like your widget’s. You can give it your own domain name:

SettingsWebsiteDomain

Your domain stays in your name, at your host. If you do not have one, it is bought from a host (OVH, Gandi). Until a domain is connected, the site uses the address assigned by Service.

The Add a domain button asks for Your domain name, without “www” or “https://”, and its Role:

  • Primary domain — it becomes your website’s address as soon as it is connected;
  • Redirect — it redirects to your primary domain.

Service first checks the domain’s email, so as not to cut off your emails.

The domain’s page lists the DNS lines to create at your host, each with its Type, Name, Value and Status (Detected or Pending). Copy them as they are.

  1. Add the TXT lines first: they prove the domain is yours.
  2. When the HTTPS certificate is ready, the screen asks you to add the last line.

If the domain has email, add these lines without changing the DNS servers. Service checks the lines by itself; Check now starts a check again. Propagation sometimes takes a few hours. Once connected, the domain shows HTTPS active.

The The address without “www” card explains how to make the version without “www” lead to your site too, depending on what your host allows.

Only one domain is Primary: it is the address shown to your guests and to Google. Your other domains and the address assigned by Service redirect to it, and your old links keep working.

Make primary changes the primary domain; it is possible once the lines are detected and the HTTPS certificate is ready. Google takes a few weeks to switch. After the switch, update the link on your Google listing and your Instagram account.

Remove the domain cuts the link between that domain and your website. If it was the primary domain, the site goes back to the address assigned by Service.

If the Website add-on ends, your domains stay attached to the site for 30 days, then they are removed.
